Historical Context
The LTV A-7A Corsair II was a carrier-based attack aircraft primarily used by the U.S. Navy for ground support, combat search and rescue, and precision bombing during the Vietnam War, beginning in 1967. It operated across Southeast Asia, and later served in operations such as the 1983 Lebanon raid, 1986 Libyan strikes, and the 1991 Gulf War.
Key Operational Locations and Conflicts:
Vietnam War: The A-7A made its combat debut in December 1967 with VA-147, operating off the USS Ranger. Other carriers included the USS Ticonderoga, USS Enterprise, and USS Saratoga.
Southeast Asia/Thailand: Air Force variants, andNavy models, flew in Cambodia and over Thailand during the Vietnam era.
1975 Mayaguez Incident: Used in strikes against Cambodia.
1983 Grenada & Lebanon: Used by the Navy in the invasion of Grenada and the airstrike against Lebanon.
Libya (1986): Participated in Operation El Dorado Canyon, with A-7s from the USS Saratoga and USS America.
Persian Gulf (1988): Participated in Operation Praying Mantis.
Operation Desert Storm (1991): The final combat role for the U.S. Navy, with VA-46 and VA-72 launching from the USS John F. Kennedy.
Operators:
U.S. Navy: Primary early user of the A-7A, A-7B, and A-7E variants.
U.S. Air Force & Air National Guard: Used A-7D and A-7K variants.
International: Exported to the Greek Air Force in the 1970s and the Portuguese Air Force in the late 1980s.
The A-7 was known as "SLUF" (Short Little Ugly Fella) to its pilots, serving in combat for over two decades before being replaced by the F/A-18 Hornet and F-16 Fighting Falcon.
