6mm Romanian WWII Tank Markings – King Michael Cross, Late War
This decal sheet provides a large selection of Romanian King Michael Cross (Crucea Mihai) national markings for WWII armored vehicles. The markings are sized for 6mm / approximately 1:285–1:300 scale vehicles and are supplied in multiple sizes and styles to suit tanks, tank destroyers, assault guns, armored cars, and other Romanian vehicles.
The sheet includes white-outline crosses, and black crosses with contrasting white edging, allowing the markings to remain visible over a variety of camouflage colors. Several graduated sizes are provided for placement on turret sides, hull sides, rear armor, engine decks, and other identification positions.
Historical Background
Following the abdication of King Carol II in 1940, Romania adopted a distinctive cross associated with King Michael I as an important national military identification marking. The emblem was initially associated with the Royal Romanian Air Force but was also adapted for use on Romanian armored vehicles. On tanks, a simplified white-outline Michael Cross was commonly painted on the hull sides and turret rear, while larger aerial-recognition markings could be placed on upper surfaces.
The Michael Cross became particularly associated with Romanian armor during the campaigns on the Eastern Front from 1941 through 1944. It appeared on Romanian-built and foreign-supplied equipment, including vehicles such as the R-2, TACAM series, Panzer III and Panzer IV, although individual vehicles varied considerably in the size, style, and placement of their markings.
Contemporary references indicate that Romanian armored markings were frequently applied as relatively simple white stenciled crosses rather than a completely standardized and colored version of the King Michael Cross.
