Historical Context
The 547th Bombardment Squadron was one of four B-17 squadrons assigned to the 384th Bombardment Group. Operating from RAF Grafton Underwood in Northamptonshire, England, the group flew with the U.S. Eighth Air Force and began combat operations in June 1943.
The 384th flew 316 combat missions, attacking airfields, aircraft and motor works, steel and armament plants, transportation centers and other strategic targets across Germany and occupied Europe. The group also took part in major Eighth Air Force operations as the daylight bombing offensive expanded through 1944 and 1945.
The 547th Squadron used the fuselage code SO. By 1944, increasingly prominent group and squadron identification markings were used to make aircraft easier to identify during assembly and formation flying.
The 384th Bomb Group's distinctive identification marking was the Triangle P. In the high-visibility marking system introduced in 1944, the 547th was identified by squadron number 4 at the apex of the group marking.
