Historical Context
The 526th Bombardment Squadron was one of four B-17 squadrons assigned to the 379th Bombardment Group. Based at RAF Kimbolton (AAF Station 117) in Huntingdonshire, England, the group flew with the U.S. Eighth Air Force from 1943 through the end of the European war.
The 379th carried out strategic bombing missions against aircraft factories, transportation centers, oil facilities and other German war-industry targets, while also supporting Allied operations during the Normandy campaign, the advance across France, the Battle of the Bulge and the final drive into Germany.
The 526th Squadron used the fuselage code LF. As natural-metal B-17Gs became common and formation sizes increased, the group adopted larger and more conspicuous identification markings to improve recognition in the air.
The 379th Bomb Group's distinctive identification marking was the Triangle K. In the late-war high-visibility system, the 526th was identified by squadron number 3.
