Historical Context
The 358th Bombardment Squadron served with the 303rd Bombardment Group, the famous “Hell's Angels” group of the U.S. Eighth Air Force. Operating from RAF Molesworth in Huntingdonshire, England, the group entered combat in November 1942 and became one of the best-known early American B-17 units in Britain.
The squadron included the B-17F Hell's Angels, one of the most famous Fortresses of the early Eighth Air Force and the first Eighth Air Force B-17 credited with completing 25 combat missions. The group's aircraft later transitioned from olive-drab finishes to natural-metal B-17Gs.
The 358th Squadron used the fuselage code VK. Its 1944 high-visibility markings were designed to make aircraft easier to recognize during formation assembly and combat operations.
The 303rd Bomb Group's distinctive identification marking was the Triangle C. In the high-visibility system adopted in August 1944, the 358th was identified by squadron number 1 at the apex of the red-and-white Triangle C marking.
