Historical Context
The 326th Bombardment Squadron served with the 92nd Bombardment Group, one of the earliest B-17 groups deployed to the U.S. Eighth Air Force in Britain. The group operated from several English stations before moving to RAF Podington in Bedfordshire in September 1943.
The 92nd flew combat missions in 1942, then temporarily served as an operational training organization before returning to combat in May 1943. Its B-17s attacked shipyards, aircraft facilities, industrial targets, airfields and transportation objectives across occupied Europe and Germany.
The 326th Squadron used the fuselage code JW. Across the 1942-44 period, its aircraft reflected the transition from early olive-drab Fortresses and simpler markings to natural-metal B-17Gs with increasingly standardized group identification.
The 92nd Bomb Group's distinctive First Air Division identification marking was the Triangle B.
