Historical Context
The 323rd Bombardment Squadron served with the 91st Bombardment Group, one of the pioneering B-17 groups of the U.S. Eighth Air Force. Based at RAF Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire, England, the group began combat operations in November 1942 and became known as the “Ragged Irregulars.”
From 1942 through 1944, the 91st took part in the expanding American daylight strategic bombing campaign against industrial, transportation and military targets in occupied Europe and Germany. During this period, its B-17s displayed evolving national insignia, squadron codes, tail markings and camouflage schemes.
The 323rd Squadron used the fuselage code OR. Early aircraft appeared without the later standardized group tail device, while replacement aircraft and later B-17Gs reflected the changing identification system of the First Air Division.
After the First Air Division group-marking system was introduced in 1943, the 91st Bomb Group's distinctive identification marking was the Triangle A.
