Historical Information
These 1-600 Congo-region air force roundel decals reproduce national aircraft markings associated with Katanga, Zaire, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The three designs reflect some of the most dramatic political changes in post-colonial African history and make the sheet especially useful for Congo Crisis, Cold War, and later Central African aviation subjects.
The former Belgian Congo became independent in 1960, and the mineral-rich province of Katanga declared itself independent during the Congo Crisis. Katanga maintained its own air arm during the 1960–1963 secession and used distinct markings on aircraft operated by local and foreign personnel.
The country was renamed Zaire in 1971 under Mobutu Sese Seko, bringing new national symbols and aircraft insignia. In 1997, the state again became the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and military aircraft markings changed to reflect the restored national identity.
Representative aircraft for these periods include the Fouga CM.170 Magister associated with Katangan operations, Mirage 5M, MB-326, and C-130 Hercules aircraft in Zairian service, and later Su-25, An-26, and helicopter types used by the DR Congo.
Because political names and insignia changed repeatedly in the Congo region, the marking should be matched carefully to the specific date and aircraft being modeled. Period photographs are particularly useful for Katangan and early post-independence subjects.
