Historical Information

This sheet represents an alternative set of proportions within the RAF's early-war yellow-bordered roundel family. The outer ring should be matched to the pictured design rather than assumed to be identical to the standard Type A-1 sheet.

The yellow border served the same recognition purpose as on other Type A-1 markings: it separated the dark blue outer portion from surrounding camouflage. Variations could result from changes in instructions or the way an existing roundel was repainted.

Early-war marking practice changed considerably before the introduction of the Type C and C.1 family in 1942. Photographs therefore show combinations that do not always conform neatly to one simplified reference drawing.

Use this variant when its proportions match the intended airframe. It is particularly useful for reproducing a documented early-war appearance, but it should not be applied as a universal replacement for the standard Type A-1 roundel.
