Historical Information

The Type C was introduced in July 1942 as part of a broader redesign of RAF national markings. The change reflected the wartime need to balance positive identification with increasingly sophisticated camouflage and reduced visibility.

During the 1942-1945 period, Type C markings were generally used on light-colored surfaces and appropriate lower-wing positions, while Type B remained common on upper wings and Type C.1, with its yellow outer ring, was used where extra contrast was required on darker surfaces.

The Type C family appeared on a vast range of late-war aircraft including the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Typhoon, Hawker Tempest, de Havilland Mosquito, Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, Bristol Beaufighter, North American Mustang, and Douglas Dakota.

Because late-war RAF aircraft often carried Type B, Type C, and Type C.1 markings simultaneously in different positions, the Type C sheet is especially useful when building complete historically accurate marking combinations.
