Historical Information

The Type C.1 was introduced in July 1942 as part of the RAF's revised wartime marking system. It replaced the earlier Type A-1 on many dark fuselage surfaces while preserving the yellow outline that helped the national insignia remain visible against dark green, ocean grey, night, and other camouflage finishes.

From 1942 through the end of the war, Type C.1 became especially common on fuselage sides. In early 1945 its use expanded on selected Second Tactical Air Force aircraft, including fighters and photo-reconnaissance types, as marking directives evolved for operations over northwest Europe.

Representative aircraft include the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Typhoon, Hawker Tempest, de Havilland Mosquito, Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, Bristol Beaufighter, North American Mustang, and many other mid- and late-war RAF aircraft.

Type C.1 was normally part of a mixed marking scheme, often appearing with Type B upper-wing roundels and Type C lower-surface markings. Correct combinations depend on aircraft type and date.
