Historical Information
The B-1 was never as universal as the better-known Type A-1, Type B, or Type C family. It appeared on selected aircraft during 1939 and was also used on the fuselage sides of some night-flying bombers and night fighters from late 1940 into 1942.
This combination was particularly useful on aircraft finished in very dark camouflage, where the yellow outer ring helped separate the low-visibility red-and-blue marking from the surrounding paint. The result is one of the more distinctive specialist RAF roundels of the early war.
Documented applications include aircraft such as the Vickers Wellington and Boulton Paul Defiant, along with other night-operating types and selected aircraft carrying non-standard or transitional marking schemes.
Because Type B-1 was used more selectively than standard Type B, modelers should use period photographs whenever possible. This sheet is ideal for reproducing aircraft that do not fit the more common early-war Type A-1 or standard Type B pattern.
