Historical Information
British aircraft markings during World War I had to remain legible over increasingly varied finishes. On dark-painted surfaces, the blue outer edge of the standard red-white-blue roundel could lose contrast against the surrounding camouflage.
An additional white outline made the boundary of the roundel easier to distinguish. This sheet represents the white-bordered Type A treatment associated with the 1916-1919 period.
The period spans the Royal Flying Corps and the newly formed Royal Air Force. The same basic national colors continued across that organizational change, while aircraft and unit markings retained many wartime practices.
White outlines were not applied identically to every surface or aircraft. Use photographs to determine whether the chosen miniature needs the bordered version, the plain Type A marking or another contemporary treatment.
