Historical Information
The red-white-blue marking conventionally called Type A developed from the national insignia used by the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. The white ring helped distinguish the red center from the blue outer field.
The sheet covers the 1915-1929 period, which spans both RFC service and the early RAF. The Royal Air Force was formed in 1918, so aircraft represented after that date should be described using the appropriate RAF unit identity.
Such markings appeared on lighter surfaces and in positions where the complete tricolor roundel remained readily visible. Other treatments were adopted for darker finishes and night operations, so one roundel style did not cover every aircraft surface.
Match the proportions and any surrounding border to the intended airframe. Period photographs are especially useful when combining upper-wing, lower-wing and fuselage markings on a World War I miniature.
