Historical Information
From 1914 until the spring of 1918, German military aircraft used variations of the cross pattée on the wings and commonly on the fuselage and tail surfaces. Early applications frequently appeared over a white field, although exact proportions, placement, and the amount of surrounding white varied considerably between manufacturers, units, and individual aircraft.
As the war progressed, the cross became more standardized, but substantial variation remained. White fields were reduced or replaced by contrasting borders on many aircraft, creating several recognizable styles. In mid-April 1918, the German Air Service began replacing the cross pattée with the straight-sided Balkenkreuz, making the Iron Cross family primarily appropriate for aircraft modeled before that transition.
Style #1 is suitable for a wide range of early- and mid-war Imperial German aircraft, including types such as the Fokker Eindecker, Albatros D-series, Pfalz D.III, DFW C.V, early Fokker Dr.I, and Gotha bombers, depending on the specific aircraft and date being modeled.
