Historical Information
The F-4F Phantom II entered Luftwaffe service in 1973 and became a major West German combat aircraft during the Cold War. It served in fighter and fighter-bomber roles and continued in German service after reunification.
German Phantom identification numbers use two digits on each side of the national cross. The F-4F fleet occupied the 37+ and 38+ number series, making these markings an individual aircraft identifier rather than a squadron badge.
The aircraft number remained an important identifier through changes of camouflage, unit assignment and equipment. Consequently, a particular number does not by itself establish the correct squadron emblem or the finish for a given year.
Match the selected serial to a dated photograph, including the style and placement of the national crosses and fin markings. This sheet supplies the listed number range; the wing crosses and fin flashes are separate items.
