Historical Information

The USAF service title is a different marking from a national roundel or a squadron emblem. Its purpose is to identify U.S. Air Force on the aircraft, while other markings identify nationality, unit and individual airframe.

Service lettering forms part of an aircraft's overall identification scheme. Its size, position and contrast vary with the available fuselage area, the aircraft type and the instructions or practices used for that finish.

Black, white and subdued treatments allow lettering to remain appropriate to different paint schemes. A high-contrast title on a light surface produces a different appearance from pale lettering over dark camouflage or a reduced-contrast marking on grey paint.

For a historical model, check that the aircraft carried the USAF wording in the selected color and location. The different decal sizes provide fitting choices; they do not establish that every aircraft of the service carried the same title in the same position.
