Historical Information
These 1-600 East African air force roundel decals provide national aircraft markings for Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. The three designs represent neighboring air forces that emerged from the end of British colonial rule and developed along very different political and military paths during the Cold War.
Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania established national military aviation organizations during the independence era of the early 1960s. Their aircraft markings replaced British colonial identity with national colors and symbols, while their equipment increasingly reflected different international relationships.
Kenya remained closely connected to Western suppliers and operated aircraft including the Hawker Hunter and F-5 Freedom Fighter. Uganda received Soviet combat aircraft including MiG-17s and MiG-21s, while Tanzania operated Soviet and Chinese types including MiG-21s, F-6s, and later J-7-family fighters. All three air arms also relied heavily on transports, trainers, liaison aircraft, and helicopters.
These markings are particularly useful for aircraft associated with the Uganda–Tanzania War, Cold War East Africa, regional border conflicts, and post-independence African aviation.
Exact roundel size and placement varied among the three countries and across imported aircraft types. Period photographs should be used when matching a specific aircraft to a particular campaign or year.
