Historical Information

The Syrian Air Force was established shortly after Syria achieved independence in the 1940s. Its first aircraft included trainers and light military types, but the outbreak of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War quickly forced the young service into combat.

Early Syrian aircraft carried a roundel based on the national colors of the period, incorporating black, white, and green with three red stars. The design reflected the Syrian national flag then in use.

Aircraft associated with the early Syrian Air Force included armed T-6/Harvard-type trainers, followed by increasingly capable fighter aircraft acquired during the 1950s.

British-built Gloster Meteors provided Syria with an early jet-fighter capability, while growing relations with the Soviet bloc brought aircraft such as the MiG-15 and MiG-17 into Syrian service.

The 1948–1958 period therefore represents a fascinating transitional era in Syrian military aviation, moving from a small collection of propeller-driven aircraft to an increasingly Soviet-equipped jet air force.

In 1958, Syria joined Egypt to form the United Arab Republic, and Syrian aircraft markings changed to reflect the new political union.
