Historical Information
Morocco regained independence from France and Spain in 1956, and the Royal Moroccan Air Force was established later that year. Its aircraft insignia drew directly from Moroccan national symbolism, particularly the green five-pointed Seal of Solomon or pentagram displayed on the national flag.
During the Cold War, Morocco developed close military relationships with Western suppliers while also operating aircraft from several other sources. Moroccan roundels appeared on aircraft including the F-5 Freedom Fighter/Tiger II, Mirage F1, Alpha Jet, C-130 Hercules, CH-47 Chinook, and numerous helicopters and training aircraft. Moroccan combat aircraft saw extensive service during the Western Sahara War, making the roundel particularly appropriate for North African and Cold War conflict collections.
In more recent service, the same national identity has continued on aircraft such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon and modern transport and helicopter types.
Roundel size and placement varied between fighters, transports, trainers, and helicopters. Period photographs are recommended when matching a specific Moroccan aircraft to a particular unit or campaign, especially during the Western Sahara conflict.
