Historical Information

No. 426 (Thunderbird) Squadron belonged to the Royal Canadian Air Force. Formed in Britain in October 1942, it became part of the Canadian contribution to RAF Bomber Command and served within No. 6 (RCAF) Group.

After operating Wellingtons and Lancaster IIs, No. 426 Squadron converted to the Halifax in 1944. Its Halifax crews continued bombing operations through the final year of the war in Europe.

No. 78 Squadron RAF was an established Halifax unit of No. 4 Group. It took part in major night operations against targets in Germany and occupied Europe during the sustained Bomber Command offensive.

The sheet therefore brings together a Canadian squadron and an RAF squadron operating the same bomber family. Their different national and group affiliations should be retained when identifying aircraft or presenting a mixed Halifax formation.
