Historical Information
The Type D roundel was introduced in the immediate postwar period, with the familiar bright red, white and blue design associated with RAF aircraft from 1947 onward.
Its proportions differ from the wartime Type A and Type C families. That distinction matters on a model even though all three use the same basic national colors.
The postwar marking accompanied the RAF's transition from wartime piston-engine aircraft to successive generations of jets. Full-color roundels remained part of British aircraft identity as operational finishes and service roles changed.
Later camouflage and low-visibility schemes used other treatments, so Type D is not appropriate for every postwar aircraft. Select the size and position from photographs of the particular aircraft and period.
