Historical Information

Nos. 65, 66, and 72 Squadrons all operated Spitfires during the Battle of Britain. They formed part of Fighter Command's network of day-fighter units confronting German bombers and their escorts.

No. 65 Squadron operated from the important Hornchurch sector during the opening stages of the battle. Its service places the sheet within the early-war Spitfire Mk I period.

Nos. 66 and 72 were also committed to the defense as Fighter Command shifted squadrons between sectors. These movements helped reinforce threatened areas and give heavily engaged units opportunities to recover.

Squadron codes and individual aircraft letters distinguished each unit despite broadly standardized camouflage. The white letters supplied on this sheet should be used with the marking arrangement appropriate to the selected airframe.
