Historical Information
Nos. 603, 609, and 610 were prewar Auxiliary Air Force squadrons that became important Spitfire units during the Battle of Britain. Their service illustrates the integration of volunteer squadrons into the wartime fighter force.
No. 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron converted to Spitfires shortly after the outbreak of war. It moved south from Scotland in late August 1940 to join the main battle.
No. 609 (West Riding) Squadron fought from Middle Wallop and other southern bases. No. 610 (County of Chester) Squadron served at Biggin Hill and endured heavy fighting before being withdrawn north to rest and rebuild.
Each squadron retained its own tactical identity despite sharing the Spitfire and standard Fighter Command camouflage. Unit codes, individual letters, and period roundels allow these Auxiliary formations to be distinguished in a miniature collection.
