Historical Information

No. 222 (Natal) Squadron re-equipped with Spitfires in 1940 and fought as a day-fighter unit during the Battle of Britain. It moved to Hornchurch as the air fighting intensified.

No. 234 Squadron also operated Spitfires during the 1940 campaign. The AZ codes visible on this decal sheet identify that squadron; they do not identify No. 224 Squadron, which served in Coastal Command.

No. 266 Squadron was another Spitfire-equipped Fighter Command unit involved in the Battle of Britain. Its aircraft formed part of the day-fighter force defending Britain before the RAF expanded offensive fighter operations.

The sheet's ZD, AZ, and UO code groups distinguish the three units on otherwise similarly finished aircraft. Pair each code group with the appropriate individual aircraft letter and a dated reference for the airframe being modeled.
