Historical Information
No. 19 Squadron at Duxford became the first RAF squadron to receive the Supermarine Spitfire in 1938. It played a central role in introducing the fighter into operational service.
No. 41 Squadron converted to Spitfires in early 1939. It flew defensive patrols and operations over Dunkirk before fighting through the Battle of Britain.
No. 54 Squadron also entered the war with Spitfires. It covered the Dunkirk evacuation and then fought intensely from the Hornchurch sector during the summer and autumn of 1940.
Together, the three squadrons trace the Spitfire's development from a new prewar fighter into a principal aircraft of Fighter Command. Their distinct squadron codes identify individual units within that common aircraft and camouflage tradition.
