Historical Information
During the Cold War, camouflage and reduced visual contrast became increasingly important to RAF tactical aircraft markings. National insignia were adapted to avoid conspicuous white areas on dark camouflage.
This sheet represents the Modern red-and-blue roundel associated with camouflaged aircraft from the 1970s. It should be distinguished from the wartime Type B design, whose proportions were different.
Subdued national markings formed part of a wider finish that also included aircraft numbers, unit markings and stencilling. The appropriate contrast depended on the surrounding paint and the role of the aircraft.
Use a dated photograph to match the roundel's proportions and placement. A later low-visibility marking is not automatically suitable for an earlier Cold War camouflage scheme, even when the aircraft type remained in service.
