Historical Information
No. 617 Squadron was created for Operation Chastise, the Dams Raid of 16/17 May 1943. Specially modified Lancasters carried Barnes Wallis's Upkeep weapon against the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe dams.
The operation established the squadron's enduring Dambusters reputation. The AJ-coded aircraft represented on this sheet belong to that particularly recognizable phase of its history.
The squadron later developed into a specialist precision-bombing unit. During 1944 and 1945 it employed Tallboy and Grand Slam weapons against heavily defended or hardened strategic targets.
The AJ and YZ options represent different operational configurations and periods. Use the corresponding modified Lancaster miniature for the chosen weapon and mission, rather than treating the Dams Raid and Grand Slam aircraft as interchangeable.
