Historical Information
No. 1 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force was Canada's own fighter squadron in the Battle of Britain. After arriving in Britain in June 1940, it re-equipped with RAF-standard Hurricane Mk Is and became operational in August.
The Canadian squadron later became No. 401 Squadron RCAF in 1941. The No. 1 designation on this sheet belongs to its earlier period and should be retained when describing a Battle of Britain aircraft.
No. 43 Squadron, the Fighting Cocks, flew Hurricanes from the Tangmere sector and was heavily involved in defending southern England. No. 46 returned to front-line Hurricane operations after combat in the Norwegian campaign.
The sheet brings together Canadian and RAF units that contributed to the Hurricane force during 1940. Their individual tactical codes preserve that distinction within a mixed Fighter Command formation.
