Historical Information

No. 242 Squadron had a strong Canadian association and became well known under Douglas Bader. He rebuilt the unit after its losses in France and led it during the Battle of Britain.

From Duxford, No. 242 formed a central element of the multi-squadron Big Wing formations associated with No. 12 Group. Its Hurricane service is closely linked with that debated approach to concentrating fighter strength.

No. 501 Squadron fought in France before returning to Britain and continued flying Hurricanes during the 1940 campaign. No. 601 (County of London) Squadron, remembered as the prewar Millionaires' Squadron, also fought with Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain.

The sheet combines Commonwealth-associated and Auxiliary traditions within Fighter Command. Their different squadron codes allow the units to retain their own identities even when represented by the same Hurricane miniature.
