Historical Information
No. 35 Squadron became the first operational RAF unit equipped with the Handley Page Halifax. It introduced the aircraft to combat in 1941, helping establish the Halifax as one of Bomber Command's principal four-engined bombers.
In 1942, No. 35 Squadron was selected for the Pathfinder Force. Its crews helped locate and mark targets for following Main Force aircraft, a specialist role in the development of the night bombing offensive.
No. 158 Squadron became an established Halifax unit of No. 4 Group. It flew the type on the great majority of its wartime bombing operations, representing the sustained Main Force contribution of Halifax-equipped squadrons.
These two units illustrate different parts of the Halifax's operational history: the introduction of the aircraft, specialist target-finding, and the wider bombing campaign. Match the markings to the unit's Halifax period, since squadron histories also include other aircraft types.
