Historical Information
The modern Portuguese Air Force was established as an independent service in 1952. Its national aircraft marking drew on the Cross of Christ, a symbol with deep roots in Portuguese history and exploration, and became a defining feature of Portuguese military aircraft throughout the Cold War.
From 1961 to 1974, Portuguese aircraft saw extensive combat in Angola, Portuguese Guinea, and Mozambique. Aircraft carrying Portuguese roundels included the T-6 Texan, Fiat G.91, Dornier Do 27, Nord Noratlas, C-47, Alouette III, and Puma, along with other transports, patrol aircraft, trainers, and helicopters. The Fiat G.91 and Alouette III became especially closely associated with Portuguese counter-insurgency operations in Africa.
After the end of the colonial wars, the same national symbol continued in Portuguese service on later NATO-era aircraft.
Portuguese roundel size and placement varied across aircraft types and periods, particularly between tactical aircraft, transports, and helicopters. Period photographs are recommended when modeling a specific aircraft from Angola, Guinea, Mozambique, or later NATO service.
