Historical Information
In 1977, Libya adopted an entirely green national flag following the establishment of the Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. Military aircraft markings were simplified accordingly, and the Libyan Air Force used a plain green roundel on wings and fuselage.
The green roundel appeared during a period when Libya operated one of the largest and most diverse combat-aircraft inventories in North Africa. Aircraft carrying it included the MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, Su-22, Mirage F1, Tu-22, Mi-8, and Mi-24, along with transports and training aircraft.
These markings became associated with Libyan involvement in Chad, Gulf of Sidra confrontations with the United States, and numerous Cold War regional operations. The green roundel remained in use until the collapse of the Gaddafi government in 2011, after which Libya restored the pre-1969 national flag and adopted different aircraft markings.
The solid green roundel is specific to the 1977–2011 Jamahiriya period. Earlier Kingdom and Libyan Arab Republic aircraft, as well as post-2011 Libyan aircraft, used different national markings.
