Historical Information

The Jordanian marking incorporates the country's four national colors of black, white, green, and red. The roundel consists of concentric black, white, and green areas with a red sector containing the distinctive seven-pointed white star found on the Jordanian national flag.

Jordan developed its military aviation organization from the air component of the Arab Legion, with the modern Royal Jordanian Air Force formally developing during the 1950s.

British aircraft played an important role in its early development. The Hawker Hunter became one of the best-known Jordanian fighters of the 1950s and 1960s and saw service during a particularly turbulent period of Middle Eastern history.

Jordan later operated aircraft including the F-104 Starfighter, F-5 Tiger II, and Mirage F1, reflecting the country's continuing use of both American and European combat aircraft.

Beginning in the 1990s, the F-16 Fighting Falcon became the principal combat aircraft of the Royal Jordanian Air Force. Transport and rotary-wing aircraft have included the C-130 Hercules, UH-60 Black Hawk, and AH-1 Cobra.

The basic Jordanian national roundel has remained remarkably consistent and is one of the most distinctive and long-lived aircraft markings in the Middle East.
