Historical Information

The Hinomaru, or “circle of the sun,” is based on the same red sun-disc symbol used on the Japanese national flag. It served as the primary national identification marking on Japanese military aircraft and was normally carried on the upper and lower wing surfaces and sides of the fuselage.

Although many Japanese aircraft carried a plain red Hinomaru, a white border was added when greater contrast or visibility was required. The border was particularly effective when the insignia was placed over the increasingly common dark green upper-surface camouflage used on Japanese combat aircraft. The contrasting white ring made the red national insignia much easier to distinguish against the darker surrounding finish.

White-bordered Hinomaru were already appearing before dark-green camouflage became universal. Historical research on the A6M Zero indicates that orders were issued around August 1942 to make the Hinomaru more conspicuous by adding a white surround. Nakajima-built A6M2 Zeros are documented with approximately 75 mm white borders around their fuselage Hinomaru, and white outlining became common on later factory-camouflaged Zeros produced by both Nakajima and Mitsubishi.

As the Pacific War progressed, however, visibility could become a disadvantage. Ground crews sometimes overpainted the white borders with dark green or black, reducing the conspicuous appearance of the national marking. This resulted in considerable variation between individual aircraft, with photographs showing plain red Hinomaru, bright white-bordered versions, and partially or completely overpainted borders.

White-bordered Hinomaru appeared on a wide variety of Japanese aircraft, including examples of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa “Oscar,” Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien “Tony,” Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate “Frank,” Mitsubishi G4M “Betty,” Yokosuka D4Y “Judy,” and numerous other fighters, bombers, reconnaissance aircraft, and naval aircraft. Exact application varied according to aircraft type, manufacturer, unit, camouflage scheme, and date.
