Historical Information

The Israeli Air Force was formally established in May 1948, shortly after the declaration of the State of Israel. Its earliest aircraft were assembled from an extraordinary mixture of civilian transports, trainers, surplus World War II aircraft, and combat types obtained from numerous foreign sources.

During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, aircraft such as the Avia S-199 and Supermarine Spitfire carried versions of the Star of David marking. Early markings varied considerably in size, proportion, and shade because aircraft were being placed into service rapidly under wartime conditions.

As the air force developed, the national insignia became standardized around the familiar blue Star of David on a white circle. The marking is normally carried on the wings and fuselage, making it one of the most visually recognizable military aviation symbols in the world.

The roundel subsequently appeared on aircraft representing every major era of Israeli aviation, including the Meteor, Mystère, Mirage III, A-4 Skyhawk, F-4 Phantom II, Kfir, F-15 Eagle, and F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Low-visibility versions have also appeared on some aircraft, but the blue-and-white Star of David remains the classic national marking associated with the Israeli Air Force.
