Historical Information

Honduran military aviation began developing during the 1920s, when the government acquired its first military aircraft, including a British-built Bristol F.2B Fighter. Over the following decades, the air arm expanded into the modern Fuerza Aérea Hondureña and became one of the longest-established military aviation services in Central America.

Honduran aircraft markings have changed several times during the service’s history. From approximately 1938 to 1974, the FAH used both a national aircraft roundel and a matching fin flash incorporating the blue-and-white national colors and star motif. Between 1974 and 2013, the service generally relied on the distinctive fin flash without a separate national roundel. Roundels were reintroduced beginning in 2013, with another updated version appearing in 2022.

The Honduran fin flash uses the familiar blue-white-blue arrangement with a central blue five-pointed star, closely reflecting elements of the Honduran national flag. Although the exact shade of blue, proportions, and configuration have changed over time, the basic blue-and-white star design has remained closely associated with FAH aircraft.

Over the years, Honduran national markings have appeared on a wide range of aircraft, including the F4U Corsair, P-38 Lightning, T-6 Texan, T-28 Trojan, F-86 Sabre, A-37 Dragonfly, Cessna A-37, C-47 Dakota, C-130 Hercules, and later combat aircraft such as the Dassault Super Mystère and F-5E/F Tiger II, as well as numerous helicopters and transports.

The FAH is especially well known among aviation historians for its participation in the 1969 conflict with El Salvador, commonly known as the Football War. Honduran aircraft, including surviving WWII-era fighters, took part in one of the last conflicts in which piston-engine combat aircraft fought operationally against one another.
