Historical Information
These 1-600 African air force roundel decals provide national aircraft markings for Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Guinea, and Ghana. The four designs represent air forces that developed in the post-colonial era and followed very different political and military paths during the Cold War.
As these countries gained independence, newly formed national air arms replaced European colonial markings with insignia based on their own flags and national symbols. Their fleets reflected a broad range of foreign relationships: Guinea and Guinea-Bissau received considerable Soviet and Eastern Bloc support, while Senegal maintained close military ties with France and Ghana operated aircraft from several Western and later other international suppliers.
These roundels are appropriate for a wide range of subjects, including MiG-series fighters in Guinean service, French-built trainers and light combat aircraft in Senegal, and trainers, transports, and combat aircraft used by Ghana and Guinea-Bissau. They are especially useful for modeling African air forces of the 1960s through the late Cold War.
Because the four air forces used aircraft obtained from different countries and changed markings over time, exact roundel size and placement can vary. Period photographs are recommended when modeling a specific aircraft or campaign.
