Historical Information
The Balkenkreuz was the straight-sided national cross introduced on German military aircraft during the final year of World War I. It replaced the curved-sided cross pattée commonly described as the Iron Cross.
Changes in marking instructions during 1918 produced different proportions of black cross and white edging. Repainting older crosses and applying new markings at factories did not always produce identical results.
The design illustrated for this sheet has slender straight black arms bordered in white. It is a beam cross rather than the curved-sided Iron Cross with a narrow center that appears on another sheet.
When recreating a late-war aircraft, compare the arm width, span, and white border with photographs. Crosses on the wings, fuselage, and tail can differ, so one style should not automatically be used in every position.
