Historical Information
Cuban military aviation traces its origins to 1915, when the Cuerpo Aéreo del Ejército was established. The basic blue-disc, red-triangle, and white-star aircraft marking was introduced in 1928 and remained associated with Cuban military aviation through much of the pre-revolutionary period.
Following the 1959 Cuban Revolution, aircraft markings briefly changed. Between approximately 1959 and 1962, revolutionary aircraft used a different red-triangle-and-bar insignia. By 1963, however, Cuba had returned to the earlier blue-disc design with the inverted red triangle and white star. That restored marking became the familiar national insignia seen on aircraft of the Fuerza Aérea Revolucionaria and later the Defensa Antiaérea y Fuerza Aérea Revolucionaria (DAAFAR).
The insignia became especially recognizable during the Cold War as Cuba transitioned to Soviet-designed aircraft. It appeared on aircraft such as the MiG-15, MiG-17, MiG-19, MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-29, and L-39 Albatros, as well as transports and helicopters including the An-24, Mi-8, Mi-17, and Mi-24.
Cuban aircraft carrying these markings served not only in the defense of Cuba but also during overseas deployments and conflicts in Africa and other regions during the Cold War. The distinctive Cuban roundel therefore works well for both Caribbean scenarios and larger Cold War-era wargaming campaigns.
