Historical Information

Angola became independent from Portugal in 1975, and the new government quickly established the National Air Force of Angola. Early post-independence roundels were introduced in 1975, with revised versions appearing around 1980. The markings became closely associated with one of the most heavily contested air wars in Cold War Africa.

With extensive Soviet and Cuban assistance, Angola built a large combat air arm during the long Angolan Civil War and the wider conflict involving South African forces in southern Angola. Aircraft carrying Angolan national markings included the MiG-17, MiG-21, MiG-23, Su-22, Mi-8, and Mi-24, along with transports, trainers, and other Soviet-built types.

These roundels are especially appropriate for aircraft representing the Angolan Civil War, South African Border War, and Cold War air operations in southern Africa.

Angolan roundels changed during the years following independence, particularly between the early 1975–1980 style and later variants. Period photographs are recommended when matching a specific roundel to a particular aircraft and year.
