Historical Information
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), commonly called “Ike,” is the second ship of the Nimitz class. Built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, she was commissioned on October 18, 1977 and named for the 34th President of the United States and Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II.
Eisenhower conducted extended Indian Ocean operations during the Iranian hostage crisis and later supported Operation Desert Shield, Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve. During her 2023–2024 deployment, the carrier operated in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea, helping defend commercial shipping and conducting combat missions against Houthi forces in Yemen.
