Historical Information
The USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is the lead ship of the Nimitz class and was the first of ten nuclear-powered supercarriers that became the backbone of the modern U.S. carrier fleet. Built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, she was commissioned on May 3, 1975.
Nimitz deployed to the Indian Ocean during the Iranian hostage crisis and supported the attempted rescue mission in 1980. In 1981, F-14 Tomcats from her air wing shot down two Libyan Su-22 fighters during the Gulf of Sidra incident. Her later service included Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, along with repeated deployments to the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, and Western Pacific.
