Historical Information
USS Block Island (CVE-106) was built by Todd-Pacific Shipyards at Tacoma, Washington, and commissioned on 30 December 1944. She joined the Pacific war in 1945 and became especially notable for supporting the Allied landings at Balikpapan, Borneo, where her Marine aircraft bombed and strafed Japanese positions and flew combat air patrols over the invasion force. After World War II she performed training and Atlantic Fleet duties. Block Island was decommissioned on 27 August 1954; a planned conversion to an amphibious assault ship was later cancelled, and she was struck from the Navy List in 1959 and scrapped in Japan in 1960.
