Historical Information

USS Commencement Bay (CVE-105), lead ship of the Commencement Bay class, was launched by the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation at Tacoma, Washington, and commissioned on 27 November 1944. Rather than deploying to a combat zone, she served through most of 1945 as a training carrier in Puget Sound, preparing precommissioning crews for sister escort carriers and qualifying hundreds of naval aviators in carrier takeoffs and landings. After the Japanese surrender she continued carrier qualification work from Pearl Harbor. Commencement Bay was decommissioned on 30 November 1946, later reclassified CVHE-105 and AKV-37, struck from the Navy List in 1971, and sold for scrap in 1972.
