Historical Information
Akagi began as an Amagi-class battlecruiser at Kure Naval Arsenal and was converted to an aircraft carrier after the Washington Naval Treaty reshaped Japanese capital-ship construction. Commissioned as a carrier in 1927 and extensively modernized in the 1930s, she became one of the Imperial Japanese Navy's principal fleet carriers and served as flagship of Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo's First Air Fleet.
