Historical Information
The USS Kitty Hawk (CVA/CV-63) was the lead ship of the Kitty Hawk class, built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation at Camden, New Jersey. Commissioned on April 29, 1961, she served primarily with the Pacific Fleet.
Kitty Hawk made multiple Vietnam War combat deployments, operated in the Indian Ocean during the Iranian hostage crisis, and later supported operations connected with Somalia, Iraq, and the Persian Gulf. From 1998 to 2008 she served as the Navy’s forward-deployed carrier in Japan and flew combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
