Historical Information
The USS Saratoga (CVA/CV-60) was the second ship of the Forrestal class, built by the New York Naval Shipyard. Commissioned on April 14, 1956, she served primarily with the Atlantic Fleet and became a familiar presence in the Mediterranean during the Cold War.
Saratoga responded to major crises in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, supported the interception of the Achille Lauro hijackers in 1985, and flew strikes during Operation El Dorado Canyon in 1986. She later served in the Red Sea during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
