Historical Information

1-300 Zimbabwe – Botswana – Zambia Air Force Roundels

These 1-300 Southern African air force roundel decals provide national aircraft markings for Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia. The three designs are well suited to modeling the changing military aviation landscape of southern Africa from the independence era through the late Cold War.

Zambia became independent in 1964 and developed an air force equipped with a mixture of Western, Italian, Soviet, and later Chinese aircraft. Botswana became independent in 1966 and later established the Botswana Defence Force Air Wing, concentrating heavily on transport, training, patrol, and light aircraft. Zimbabwe emerged from the Rhodesian conflict in 1980 and inherited a substantial air arm that was progressively reorganized under the new state.

Representative subjects include MiG-21s and MB-326s in Zambian service, PC-7 and light transport aircraft in Botswana, and Hawker Hunters, BAe Hawks, Alouette helicopters, and other inherited Rhodesian types in early Zimbabwean service.

These markings are particularly useful for aircraft associated with the Rhodesian transition, regional security operations, and Cold War southern Africa.

Zimbabwean national aircraft markings changed during the early post-independence period, while Botswana and Zambia also revised markings as fleets evolved. Period photographs are recommended for exact placement and date-specific modeling.
