These 1-300 West German Federal Border Guard helicopter marking decals reproduce the service identification used by helicopters of the Bundesgrenzschutz (BGS), the Federal Border Guard of the Federal Republic of Germany. During the Cold War, BGS helicopters were a familiar sight along the inner-German border and across West Germany, supporting border surveillance, police operations, transport, rescue, disaster relief, and other federal missions.
The Bundesgrenzschutz was established in 1951 as the federal border-security force of West Germany. Its aviation arm began helicopter operations in the mid-1950s, giving the BGS a rapid-response capability at a time when the division of Germany and growing Cold War tensions made aerial mobility and border observation increasingly important.
The BGS helicopter fleet expanded substantially during the 1960s and 1970s. The Alouette II entered BGS service in 1964 and became one of the service's characteristic light helicopters. The force later added the Bell UH-1D from 1968, the MBB Bo 105 from 1971, and the SA 330 Puma from 1973. These aircraft supported missions ranging from patrol and command transport to special operations, emergency response, and civil protection. Green BGS helicopters and their federal service markings became distinctive visual features of West German government aviation during the Cold War.
Following German reunification in 1990, the Bundesgrenzschutz continued operating helicopters throughout Germany. The organization was renamed the Bundespolizei (Federal Police) on July 1, 2005, after which aircraft markings and corporate identity were progressively updated to reflect the new service.
